Research Studentship PhD student

Submission Deadline: 03/11/2023 Closed

1 VACANCY

BL234/2023

Applications are open for 1 Research Studentship, within the framework of project EcoCerâmica Cristal de Portugal, ECP-00076- IST, financed through PRR (Recovery and Resilience Plan)-IAPMEI, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering

Admission Requirements:
a) To be enrolled in an PhD
b) The candidates should possess a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related degree.
c) Preference will be given to candidates with experience in CFD.

Workplan: The need to reduce CO2 emissions is motivating the replacement of conventional fossil fuels by alternative cleaner ones. Among these, biofuels, syngas, hydrogen, and ammonia are promising options. However, the change of the fuel influences the radiative energy transferred from the flame, which may significantly affect the quality of the final product in industrial furnaces. In this scholarship, the influence of the fuel on the radiative transfer from turbulent flames will be computationally studied. Experimental data will be used to validate the numerical predictions of the spectral radiative intensity and heat fluxes. Methods to maintain as much as possible the same heat transfer when the fuel is changed (e.g., using exhaust gas recirculation or small particles) will be computationally investigated by means of inverse methods or artificial intelligence techniques. The tasks in this workplan are part of the project EcoCerâmica Cristal de Portugal, ECP-00076- IST.

Workplace: The work will be developed at IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology, and Policy Research, Instituto Superior Técnico, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Pedro Coelho and Prof. Edgar Fernandes.

Duration: The research fellowships will have the duration of 12 months. It’s expected to begin in November 2023, and may be eventually renewed for a maximum of 36 months.

Application deadline and formalization: The call is open from October 20 until November 3, 2023.

It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents:
