Marta Abrantes holds a pre-Bologna degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a PhD in Chemistry. She was a postdoctoral Humboldt fellow at the Technical University of Munich, followed by research associate positions at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto and at Instituto Superior Técnico. Her early academic career focused on sustainable chemistry and catalysis, alongside active engagement in teaching and science outreach.
In 2014, she transitioned into academic management as International Affairs Manager for the EIT InnoEnergy programmes at Instituto Superior Técnico, strengthening institutional internationalisation and strategic partnerships. Between 2016 and 2022, she was a member of the coordination team of the Master’s in Energy Engineering and Management, while continuing her teaching activities. She is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico.
Expanding her interdisciplinary profile, she completed an MSc in Political Science and International Relations at NOVA FCSH in 2023. Her dissertation, “Science Diplomacy, Portugal and the European Project”, was awarded the 2024 FLAD Political Science Award by FLAD - Luso-American Development Foundation.
Her current research interests include science diplomacy and the challenges associated with the energy transition intertwined with international relations. An example includes understanding the dynamics of critical materials for the energy transition in the EU, thus contributing to economic development frameworks focused on resource efficiency, circularity, strategic autonomy and social equilibrium. Starting from the beginning of 2026, she participates in the COST Action Science in Diplomacy Network (SidNet), contributing to Working Group 2 (Science in Diplomacy for global challenges and sustainability) and Working Group 3 (Science for Diplomacy through international scientific cooperation in complex geopolitical contexts).
