Aidan Zickmantel


PhD Candidate Industrial Ecology and Sustainability

Aidan Zickmantel holds a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Natural Resource Conservation from the University of British Columbia and is pursuing a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon. His research focuses on nature-based solutions for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in urban and regional contexts, aiming to contribute to the European Green Deal’s objective of creating sustainable and climate-resilient cities. 

Aidan’s academic and professional experience includes working as a research technician under Dr. Suzanne Simard, where he studied the impacts of forest management on ecosystem health. He also has experience as an urban tree consultant, specializing in tree health, disease management, and urban forest conservation. Aidan is also the founder of the Protecting Urban Forest Initiative, which promotes urban canopy cover and tree equity in Vancouver, collaborating with climate advocacy groups and city officials to foster sustainable urban environments.
