IN+ partners with Carbon Neutral Cities project in Sao Paulo, Brazil 18/12/2024

FAPESP and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) launched on December 10th the Science Center for Development (CCD) Carbon Neutral Cities, aiming at helping municipalities to mitigate their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to adapt to climate change by increasing the resilience of urban infrastructure. The initiative was inspired by the European Commission Mission "Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities", a mission chaired by Paulo Ferrão, who attended the event together with Manuel Heitor.

The CCDs are an initiative of FAPESP, in partnership with universities, research institutions, state secretariats and other government bodies, and have made it possible to channel a large set of skills that were diffuse or not focused on solving problems faced by the state of São Paulo. The CCD Carbon Neutral Cities will involve more than one hundred researchers and 36 institutions, both Brazilian and foreign, including the IN+ Centre for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, and the Instituto Superior Técnico.

The objectives of the research carried out includes developing and applying nature-inspired technologies to increase urban resilience to the impacts of climate change and GHG capture, as well as using digital twins and green computing to improve the efficiency of buildings, monitor emission reductions, transfer knowledge and promote public policies.
