During a conference in São Tomé dedicated to public policies and environmental sustainability, Paulo Ferrão warned of the unsustainable pace of current consumption, saying that the world is using up more resources than it can regenerate in a balanced way.
"Because the Earth's resources are finite. We live on a very small island in the middle of the universe and we have no other resources than those that are already here, except for energy, where the sun continually gives us energy. And we are failing to recover it. We continue to use fossil fuels, which are limited, and what's more, these fossil resources are transformed into CO2 which causes climate change. And we have to reverse this", he said.
Paulo Ferrão highlighted the energy transition as one of the greatest challenges facing the contemporary world and defended the need for a climate contract with cities.
"Let me give you a very clear example: public transport. You can't save energy if we all have our own individual transportation," said Paulo Ferrão. “The most efficient cities, where less is spent and where people have a better quality of life, are cities where investment has been made in public transport,” he added.
The authorities of São Tomé and Príncipe reiterated their commitment to measures in line with public policies and the principles of environmental sustainability
The cycle of conferences on climate change is part of the “End of the World” Festival taking place in São Tomé as part of the celebrations.
