Abstract Intellectual property protection is essential to fostering innovation and creativity. At a university setting, a lack of exploration of IP rights, substantially limits the amounts of funds available for artists and researchers to engage in creative activities and research and development, while, at the same time, reducing the visibility of their institution to their peers. This presentation will first provide an overview of the basic concepts of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. A particular focus will be placed on patent protection as well as patent prosecution, including an overview of the patenting process and a discussion of important worldwide deadlines to watch for.
