Campus As a Living Lab for Energy (CALL for Energy) 07/05/2021

The Energy Initiative of Técnico (IST-EI), in coordination with the Management Council and within the scope of the Técnico Sustainability Initiative, launched the project Campus As a Living Lab for Energy (CALL for Energy) aiming to transform our campi into a Living Lab.

Living Labs are new ways of innovation and are defined as user-centered, open innovation ecosystems based on a systematic user co-creation approach, integrating research and innovation processes in real life communities and settings. Education, Research, Collaboration and Infrastructures are the key concepts where Tecnico Living Lab relies, always centered on people, involving fast prototyping, open innovation and user innovation processes, seeking new solutions for a more inclusive and sustainable society.

"Everyone is invited to contribute to conceive, develop, test and implement new technologies and climatically neutral solutions in a new co-creation environment, which systematically integrates research and innovation, campus infrastructure management and education, seeking to attract funding and involve companies that make these activities possible", stated Paulo Ferrão, IST-EI coordinator.

Call for Energy fits into the objectives of the European Ecological Pact, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050, covering solutions such as renewable electricity generation, the use of innovative solutions for greater energy efficiency, using sensors spread on campuses or artificial intelligence, or even producing food in hydroponic greenhouses on top of buildings. Técnico thus intends to become a dynamic example of “learning by doing”, with society, with the economic sectors and with other partners of the scientific and technological system, betting on its mission of producing knowledge, educating the protagonists of the energy transition and lead by example.
