Vision - building "IRGC Portugal"
IRGC Portugal aims at being a research platform integrating competencies and articulating stakeholders towards improving our understanding of emerging risks with relevance to Portugal and fostering the design and implementation of knowledge-based policies relevant to human health and safety, the environment, the economy and society at large. It will operate as a think-tank aiming to anticipate major risk issues and providing risk governance policy recommendations for key decision makers, in particular those related to science and technology in Europe and throughout Portuguese speaking countries.
IRGC Portugal will establish itself as a research consortium engaging, at an initial stage, a group of Associate Laboratories with main activities in the two main Portuguese engineering schools (Instituto Superior Tecnico, IST-UTL, in Lisbon and Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, FEUP, at Porto), but is planned to evolve towards a larger collaborative platform involving other research units and Associate Laboratories, business corporations and non-governmental organizations.
IRGC Portugal will develop research on the governance of emerging and systemic risks that are relevant to the Portuguese and European frameworks, as well as to Portuguese speaking countries, and provide advanced training in this field. It will ultimately work as a research and learning platform, engaging policy makers, researchers, companies and civil society organisations, towards the assessment, appraisal, evaluation, management and communication of systemic risks and knowledge-based policies.
