Gonçalo Pinto Mendes
Gonçalo is a finishing PhD candidate on the extent of the MIT Portugal Program. He has a multi-disciplinary background, in both Industry and Academia as an energy consultant and a field engineer. As part of his work at IN+, he has been involved in energy planning projects in Portugal, the US and Asia. In his PhD, he looks at microgrid adoption patterns in urban context by performing economic and environmental optimization of the distributed generation mix in case studies of the US, Japan and Portugal. Gonçalo develops his PhD research in collaboration with the Grid Integration Group of Berkeley Lab at the University of California, where he is part of DER-CAM energy analysis tool team and where he has been participating in multiple research projects as an invited scholar. Along with Berkeley Lab, he has authored and co-authored scientific articles on microgrids analysis and optimization in numerous international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Gonçalo is also an entrepreneur by heart, being deeply involved in many MIT Portugal student initiatives such as the Energy Club and the E3 Forum international conference.
