Standing some 3,000 feet (914 meters) above sea level on the plateau of Serra do Mar, is the capital of the progressive state of Parana. The year 2000 marks the 500th anniversary of Brazil, representing a major commemoration of technology-based achievements, which has been promoted worldwide on the basis of the discoveries of the XIV century. The scientific basis behind the discoveries, as launched through the Portuguese "Sagres School of Navigation", is considered a major step in human history, based on which the discovery of Brazil is an important result.
