CURITIBA

Standing some 3,000 feet (914 meters) above sea level on the plateau of Serra do Mar, is the capital of the progressive state of Parana. Since the late 1800's, Curitiba's bracing climate and picturesque location have attracted immigrants of Slav, German, and Italian origin. Curitiba grew rapidly after 1950 and it is known for the sensible manner in which it became a major city without losing a comfortable life-style.The city derives its economic prosperity from its role as commercial and processing center for the expanding agricultural and ranch areas in the interior of the state, and more recently from industrial activities in its metropolitan area (such as telecommunications equipment and automobiles). Curitiba is also na important center in Brazil with respect to software technology and business. The population of this environmentally conscious capital has about 1,500,000 inhabitants.

BRAZIL 2000: 500 YEARS

The year 2000 marks the 500th anniversary of Brazil, representing a major commemoration of technology-based achievements, which has been promoted worldwide on the basis of the discoveries of the XIV century. The scientific basis behind the discoveries, as launched through the Portuguese "Sagres School of Navigation", is considered a major step in human history, based on which the discovery of Brazil is an important result. The Curitiba´2000 Conference will emphasize the culture of using and applying science and technology for wealth generation and diffusion, and will promote the discussion on cooperation patterns and learning networks for development.
