Green Project Awards 2011
Project “Terraprima – Pastagens Permanentes Semeadas Biodiversas e Ricas em Leguminosas” (sown biodiverse permanent pastures rich in legumes), from the company Terraprima – Serviços Ambientais (an IST “spin-off” coming from research made in IN+,www.facebook.com/pages/Terraprima/219799131382872), with an honour award in the “Product or Service” cathegory of the “Green Project Awards 2011” (www.greenprojectawards.pt/2011), September 16, Lisboa. The Minister of Agriculture and Environment referred specifically the project as an example of integration between agriculture and environment.
The project deals with carbon sequestration in farms using sown biodiverse permanent pastures rich in legumes. Since 2009, about 500 farmers were involved and 27,000 ha of pastures were installed in 2009 and 2010, leading to a carbon sequestration of 0,23 Mt. A total of 0,4 Mt are foreseen to be sequestered by 2012.
