S&T and the management of risk:
implications for technology policy

a research seminar towards new systems and policies to deal with uncertainty:
  • Preventing forest fires, by diffusing new technologies and integrated public policies
  • Improving food safety, through improved public awareness of bio-sciences
  • Minimizing waste and environmental risks, through industrial ecology
  • Securing energy supply, through sustainable sources and systems
  • Fostering sustainable spaces, through infrastructures and policies improving mobility
…reducing the impact o large scale industrial spills, through ICT´s
…minimizing failures of innovation systems, through integrated technology policies

    Objectives

To review, discuss and integrate new developments in engineering and public policy focused on the management of risk, reflecting recent methodological developments to deal with emerging challenges, as well as opportunities for science and technology. The ultimate goal is to help capturing new research trends and to find policy strategies promoting the management of risk in modern societies through joint efforts and integrated actions on technological innovation and public policy.

    Approach

A Seminar to review and interrelate recent understanding and research results in three main areas of engineering and public policy research: i) risk communication and awareness; ii) risk assessment and uncertainty management; and iii) risk management; and connect these with specific case studies in critical themes, including forest fires, food safety, waste management, energy supply, and urban safety and mobility.

The Seminar is designed to promote a cross-disciplinary debate based on risk management research. It will include keynote lectures by invited speakers followed by short presentations of case studies, to be discussed by the participants.
