A stronger demand for higher education, a greater role in research and development, a quasi inevitable involvement in the innovation process, a reinforced competition with other Universities and with non-University Higher Education institutions, a lesser stability in the financing constitute the key elements of the new environment. How will the University react, if it reacts at all? Will it demonstrate its ability to adapt at the same time its internal structure and its interface with the outside world? Will it keep its freedom to ensure its own destiny?
