Saturday, November 22, 2003 / 09h00-13h00

Instituto Superior Técnico, Post-graduation pavilion, room P7

Diffusion of Photovoltaic Solar Energy into Urban Areas

Workshop Co-ordination:
Workshop Presentation and Objectives

The main objective of the workshop is to discuss how can photovoltaic technology be promoted in urban environments, namely through its integration into buildings (BiPV – Building-Integrated Photovoltaics). The workshop will comprise two plenary sessions, one dedicated to the activities promoted by the Photovoltaic Solar Energy Programme (PVPS) of the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the other to the development strategies engaged by Switzerland, one of the most innovative countries regarding the promotion of this technology. A round table will afterwards take place under the theme “Can added values drive BiPV technology diffusion?”, focusing therefore beyond the electricity-generation dimension and value.

  • Invited Speakers
Stefan Nowak, NET Nowak Ltd./IEA-PVPS Programme
Stefan Nowak is an experimental physicist by training. His academic research activities covered thermonuclear fusion, plasma and surface physics as well as thin films. His biography is characterised by a continuous evolution involving aspects of advanced research in different areas of energy, materials and processing. He has a broad technological expertise which covers activities in communication, management and policy. He presently works as an energy expert specialised in the field of photovoltaics and renewable energies where he occupies a number of official functions, namely: Managing Director of NET Nowak Energy & Technology Ltd.; Programme Manager of the Swiss Federal PV Programme; Swiss Delegate and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the IEA PVPS Programme; Manager of the Swiss Government – Industry platform on renewable energy in international co-operation; Project leader in several national and international projects and expert to national and international bodies.

Jorge Borrego, Direcção-Geral de Energia (DGE)
Jorge Borrego is the Head of the Portuguese Directorate General for Energy (DGE) since July 2001. Still in DGE he was appointed advisor of the Director-General in 1987 and Vice-Director in 1988, a position he held until 1996. Between 1996 and 2001 he held positions at PARTEX and Galp Energia. Jorge Borrego also holds representation at several international institutions, namely at the World Bank and the United Nations as an independent consultant. He has been member of the National Delegations for the R&D Framework Programmes of the European Commission since 1990.
Jorge Borrego holds a graduate degree on Mechanical Engineering and he is a senior and voting member of the College of Mechanical Engineering of the Portuguese Engineers Council.

Paula Cadima, Faculdade de Arquitectura, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (FAUTL)
Paula Cadima received her graduated degree from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (FAUTL) in 1985 and her PhD degree from the Architectural Association Graduated School (London) in 2000, where she has also taught in the master programme “Environment and Energy Studies”.
Since she graduated she worked as architect in several ateliers in Zurich, London, Brussels and Lisbon. She is presently professor at FAUTL and coordinator of the Master Programme in Bioclimatic Architecture, lectured at the same institution. Her research interests are focused on urban microclimates, bioclimatic architecture and free cooling.

    Pedro Sasseti Paes, LABELEC/EDP
Pedro da Costa Sassetti Paes got his degree in Electronic Engineering (Telecommunications and Electronics), by the IST (Technical University of Lisbon) in 1978. In 1985, in the University Paris VII, he received the D.E.A. (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies) in Energétique/Photovoltaique. Later, in 1988, he accomplished the Ph. D. degree (Doctorat en Sciences) in Energétique/Photovoltaique, by the University of Aix-Marseille III. Finally, in 1989, he was given the equivalence to Doctor Degree in Materials Engineering/Energy Conversion, by the F.C.T. - Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
From 1980 to 1996, as a researcher at INETI - Department of Renewable Energies, he carried out R&D activities in the solar thermal and photovoltaic domain and was in charge of the “Electricity Generation from Renewable Energy Sources” group (1990-1996).
From 1996 to 2001, he was project manager at the Research and Development Office of EDP – Electricity of Portugal.
From June 2001 to April 2002, he was Assessor to the Secretary of State for Economy, having contributed to the implementation of the government’s “Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies” Programme (E4).
From 2002 on, he has been a collaborator at the R&D Department of LABELEC, S.A. (an EDP Group company), where his main activities have consisted in the definition of a common R&D strategy for the EDP Group, promotion and dissemination of R&D activities within the EDP Group, preparing and carrying out projects in the area of new and renewable energies for power generation.
He is the national delegate in the Executive Committee of the IEA-PVPS Programme since 1993, and Vice-President of the Portuguese Solar Energy Society since 2001.
