Objectives: To discuss current research in emerging aspects of engineering design, with emphasis on structural engineering and related impact on innovation patterns of manufacturing industries. The development of research programmes in close collaboration with industry, as well as the implementation of engineering design curricula, will be presented, with the discussion to be oriented in terms of perspectives and opportunities for Portugal. In addition, the need to promote university-based entrepreneurship will be discussed and assessed with particular relevance to the development of new and advanced products.
